Rams avenge loss, return to Group A finals

WINCHESTER — Geremi Long and Brian Tavenner first met on a football field when the two played in a youth league together. They drifted apart over the years, but this season at Handley their friendship has been renewed. That bond has played a big part in Handley's success, as the two have split time at quarterback. The Judges, who won the Northwestern District title with the two-QB system, host Millbrook today in the Region II, Division 3 semifinals.

Win or go home: There's no room for error for the area's four playoff-bound teams
BERRYVILLE--From Zach Shiley to Grant Shaw to Sam Shiley and now back to Zach — it hasn't mattered who has been the quarterback for Clarke County this season. The Eagles have played musical chairs at signal caller, even changing schemes and formations to adapt, but the offense has kept rolling.

Rams return to VCU with sights set on title defense
STRASBURG — The huddle inside their gymnasium had a deceptive look: A war room, perhaps, reserved for all things Wilson Memorial on Wednesday. But not even a day since Strasburg's defeat of Mathews in the state quarterfinals and ensuing bus ride home, what looked more like chalk talk was actually a checklist.

Green's commitment comes on the first day high school student-athletes are permitted to sign during the NCAA's early-signing period. Athletes have from the second Wednesday in November to the third Wednesday in November to make an early decision.

Millbrook girls finish third in Group AA meet
THE PLAINS — Before the Pioneer girls flocked to a third-place finish in Saturday's Group AA state meet, there was a tendency for their top runners to finish with similar marks, using disparate means. Issued as examples, junior Tammy Cheung is prone to quick starts, while senior Sullivan Parkes excels during the third leg of the 5K race.

Rams capture Group A crown
RICHMOND — Leading up to Saturday's Group A state competition, Strasburg cheerleaders exclaimed it was a matter of "when" they won, not "if." It was a "confident, not cocky" approach that was due, in part, to the Rams' extensive preparation and the difficulty of their stunts and routine. The combination of hours of practice and an ambitious routine helped Strasburg capture the state championship at the Siegel Center in Richmond — the school's first title in the sport since 2001.

Strasburg falls to Wilson Memorial
By Jeremy Stafford — Daily Sports Correspondent FISHERSVILLE — Were it not for the green chairs, banners, and bleachers in the gym at Wilson Memorial High School Saturday night, the Region B Championship game could have been mistaken for a home game for the Strasburg Rams. Aside from a small group of tightly packed students, standing courtside and dressed in black, only a handful of Wilson Memorial fans cheered for the Hornets, scattered like pepper spilled on a green tablecloth.

It's a sport: Don't ask Strasburg's cheerleaders if what they do takes athletic ability
STRASBURG--One by one, they trickle into Strasburg's gymnasium for practice. Their arrival is staggered due to their varied times spent in the training room getting their ankles, knees and wrists taped. Some are hobbling, nursing swollen ankles or bruised knees, and some sport bruises all over — their battle wounds from months of intense practice and competition.

Strasburg's Ayers takes aim at cross country title

McKelvey's versatility helps Rams end season on high note

Fleming's TD highlights Warriors' season finale
STEPHENS CITY — Their parents had long since been paraded down the sideline, their playoff chances weren't worth considering, and their opponent for the night was safely out of the game. But the Warriors' seniors still had unfinished business. "Me and Mike [Mullins], we walked off the field, we were like, 'Coach [Brian] Brannon, you're not taking us out until we get Flem a touchdown. You're not taking us out,'" Sherando lineman Hunter Taylor said. "He said, 'Ah, all right all right.'"

NOKESVILLE — Handley got everything it was looking for Friday night in its 42-6 win over Brentsville. They were even able to throw a bucket of water on yet another coach.

With defense struggling, SU overhauls two-deep
WINCHESTER — Head coach Paul Barnes said the Shenandoah Hornets will play their best 11 players — a performance-based evaluation that has re-assigned three freshmen to starting positions on the Hornets' defense. A look at this weekend's depth chart, in preparation for today's USA South conference game at Maryville, reveals a unit different than the one that has surrendered 80 points over its last two games.

Loss of Carter too much to overcome for Warriors
By Jeremy Stafford -- Daily Sports Correspondent STEPHENS CITY — Just minutes into the second game of the Region II semifinal match between Sherando and Western Albemarle, middle-hitter Lauren Carter jumped into the net, attempting a block, and was called for a blocking error. The error cost her team a point; the landing cost Sherando one of the best arms in the district. While her body slid down the net, Carter's foot landed awkwardly on the shoe of another player, her ankle pushed toward the ground. As she limped off the court, the tears that welled in Carter's eyes seemed to gather, not from of the pain of her sprained ankle, but from a realization that Sherando might not be able to keep up with Western Albemarle without her.

Hunter Taylor diary: Bidding farewell after a great season
Well, it looks like everyone now knows that Sherando's football team is human. And yes, we will be buying tickets for the rest of the season. But you know what? It's OK, life will go on, and as a matter of fact, life is just begining for us. Our senior football season is coming to an end, and we have learned more from this season than any other seasonwe have ever played. Because even though we are not in the playoffs, we have a chance to finish 7-3. There are a lot of teams out there that would trade us for that in a heatbeat. It just so happens that we don't play in a division that you can get into the playoffs at 5-5, and that's fine with us, because we don't deserve the playoffs.
