Colonels topple Judges
By Alyssa Goodson — Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER — The first home match of the season couldn't have gone any better for the James Wood volleyball team, as it swept Handley 3-0 (25-10, 26-24, 25-17) on Tuesday night. The Colonels came out firing in their first game, easily picking apart the Judges' defense with smart targeting and powerful attacks to take an easy 25-10 victory. James Wood's only weakness appeared to be serving, allowing half of Handley's points off service errors.

Warriors knock off Strasburg
STEPHENS CITY — The smiles on their faces certainly didn't foreshadow the end of something special. Yet, there stood the Strasburg Rams, one inevitable point from the conclusion of their 29-match winning streak, laughing among themselves at a private joke. "They were just frustrated, and I was trying to break the ice a little bit," coach Suzanne Mathias said of her team's loose moment in the last timeout she would call during the winning streak, with Sherando leading 24-17. "You have to give [Sherando] credit; they're a great team, and nothing was falling our way."

Pioneers overcome sloppy play, pull out win over Warriors
By Alyssa Goodson — Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER — It wasn't the prettiest victory, but Millbrook got the job done nonetheless, defeating Sherando 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 25-18, 25-17) at home on Friday night. Both teams started off rusty, fighting back and forth for the lead until Millbrook scored six unanswered points to take a 9-3 lead in the first game. However, the Pioneers' defensive errors allowed Sherando to slowly close the gap, eventually bringing the score to a tie at 16.

Wildcats fall short to Rappahannock
By Robert Edmonds — Daily Sports Correspondent FRONT ROYAL — Warren County knew that it would have its hands full when it hosted Rappahannock County on Friday night. The Panthers are coming off back-to-back Group AA state semifinal appearances, but this year they have some new faces, with four sophomores in the starting lineup. Struggling against Rappahannock over the past couple of years, the Wildcats hoped for a different outcome this time around. Although they took the first two games of the match, Warren County could not withstand the mighty power of Rappahannock as the Panthers came from behind to pull out a 3-2 (22-25, 28-30, 25-20, 25-18, 15-5) nondistrict victory.

'Starting fresh': Defending state champion Strasburg has a new look this season

STRASBURG —The first day Rams junior Jenna Smoot came out for practice in August, she peered around the Strasburg gym, feeling like the whole team wasn't accounted for. That's because a new year has brought new faces and new expectations for the program. What remains the same, however, is the motto: One day, one goal, one game at a time, according to head coach Suzanne Mathias.

From soccer field dreams to reality
MT. JACKSON — The Shenandoah County Soccer League could always choose to kick itself for its impending debt, but that would mask the accomplishments it has made so far. "If not now, when? And if not us, who?" said the league's president, Mike Liskey. "That's the view I've taken on this."

Hawks pleased with performance

There were fumbled snaps; an ample number for head coach Heath Gilbert in his single-wing, shotgun-heavy spread offense — a facet he chastised. Pass protection was at times dicey in the Hawks' first action against a foe wearing a different shade of blue uniforms and disparate helmets.

Redskins great Jacoby added to Shenandoah football staff
WINCHESTER — Having lost both of his parents before he was 21 years old, Joe Jacoby wanted to influence the life of young football players the way his coaches did during a storied career. Those men — amateur and professional — helped the four-time Pro Bowler and member of the NFL's 1980s All-Decade team to keep an even keel.
