Let's do lunch: Pack healthy food that children will eat
When it comes to packing a healthy and tasty lunch, whether for your youngster or yourself, a little planning can go a long way. When you pack a lunch, start by thinking about the different food groups, which include grains, dairy, proteins, fruits and vegetables, said Susan Lessar, a dietitian with Winchester Medical Center. "Try to include at least four of those five food groups when you pack your lunch," she said. "It may require you to be a little creative, if you're packing your child's lunch."

Opening soon: Valley Health fitness center to offer the gamut

WINCHESTER — Local residents looking to lose a few pounds, take a swim in a pool or lift some weights will have a new hometown health and wellness center to visit starting next month. Officials with Valley Health are nearing the completion of a new Wellness and Fitness Center at 401 Campus Blvd. in Winchester. The 56,000 square-foot facility was designed to offer a variety of services to satisfy its clients' healthy lifestyle needs, from state-of-the-art fitness equipment to spinning and yoga classes.

STRASBURG — All walks of life are finding themselves on the same path as members of one of Strasburg's newest clubs. They're calling it the Strasburg Striders, and everyone is welcome. The club has gone on about four hikes at a couple of area trails, and so far hikers have ranged in age from 10 to 71.

Power of women: Female artists combine visual, spoken art

FRONT ROYAL - Two local organizations are working together to bring visual art and literature by local women into the spotlight. This month, the Blue Ridge Arts Council and the Front Royal Women's Resource Center will present "Virginia Monologues," an art exhibit combined with literary readings featuring pieces by local women artists and writers. Tuesday, artists and council staff were working to hang and arrange the art in the exhibit at the Blue Ridge Arts Council & Gallery, at 305 E. Main St. And there was literally art from the floor to the ceiling, as one metal sculpture, by Cheryl Urbauski, is actually so tall that it raised the ceiling tiles.

WINCHESTER — Some plays come with cautions about raunchy language, nudity or special effects, but "Moonlight and Magnolias," Wayside Theatre's feisty new comedy, may be the first to bear an allergy alert. People allergic to peanuts or bananas, take note, a sign on the theater door warns.
