Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Front Royal teens 'burnin' up' to meet Jonas Brothers Monday
By Ben Orcutt -- Daily Staff Writer FRONT ROYAL Two local girls may be running on adrenaline by the time the Jonas Brothers take the stage Monday at Nissan Pavilion. Samantha DeAngelis, 16, and Brittni Shipe, 17, will be able to meet the boy-band stars backstage after Monday's concert after winning a contest sponsored by 98.3 KISS FM in Winchester. The theme of the contest was "Show Us Your Jonas," and the girls did just that by decorating DeAngelis' house on Lewis Street in Front Royal with Jonas Brothers paraphernalia. Shipe said a DJ at the radio station telephoned her on Monday to let her know she and DeAngelis had won from among 72 entries, which had been narrowed to 10 finalists. "I was like surprised, and I started screaming," Shipe said Tuesday. "[I was] just kind of in shock. I couldn't believe it." Shipe said she called DeAngelis to tell her the good news. "I just kind of stood there with my mouth open," DeAngelis said. The teenagers talked about their good fortune Tuesday in DeAngelis' bedroom, which is adorned with more than 30 Jonas Brothers posters. Ask either of them how old the Jonases are and they can tell you the brothers' birthdays in an instant. Shipe thinks Nick, 15, is the cutest, while DeAngelis thinks 18-year-old Joe is the best looking. Kevin, 20, is the oldest of the Jonas Brothers, who hail from New Jersey. DeAngelis is a rising junior at Warren County High School, and Shipe is set to attend Lord Fairfax Community College this fall after graduating in May from Royal Christian Academy in Front Royal. However, their school activities are taking a back seat for the next few days while the girls contemplate meeting their idols. Shipe and DeAngelis have been friends since they met in March at a Jonas Brothers concert in Richmond. In addition to concert tickets and backstage passes, the girls and two of their friends will be driven to and from Monday's concert in a limousine. "I won't believe it until I'm sitting there," DeAngelis said. The girls admit that it has been difficult for them to sleep since they found out they were winners. They were chosen by friends visiting the radio station's Web site and voting for their display. Sara DeAngelis, 48, has no problem's with daughter Samantha's infatuation with the Jonas Brothers. "They're good kids," Mrs. DeAngelis said. Mrs. DeAngelis said the Jonas Brothers appear to be clean-cut, and she likes the fact they wear "purity rings," which are symbolic of their pledge to remain abstinent until marriage. The girls' enthusiasm reminds her of her teenage years, Mrs. DeAngelis added, and she's happy for them and their day in the spotlight on Monday. "They'll never be the same," she said. * Contact Ben Orcutt at borcutt@nvdaily.com |
