AARP, Foreigner seek air guitarists

WOODSTOCK — Would-be rock 'n' roll stars can strut their stuff at the Shenandoah County Fair and try to win a trip to Hawaii with Foreigner.

The rock group is partnering with AARP in the "Air Guitar for My Guitar" contest. The winner will get Foreigner lead guitarist Mick Jones' autographed Gibson guitar, plus a trip to Honolulu over New Year's.

According to a news release sent by fair manager Marcy McCann, the contest is running Aug. 6 to Nov. 1. Contestants must submit videos of themselves playing air guitar and lip synching to one of five Foreigner songs.

They can enter by visiting www.WinMickJonesGuitar.

com, or by performing at a mobile recording studio accompanying the band on its tour.

The mobile studio will be at the county fair Aug. 29, the same day the group is performing.

The release says that AARP and Foreigner will post the top 20 videos online Nov. 17, and allow visitors to vote between then and Nov. 21.

"I think it's fabulous," McCann said in a Thursday afternoon phone interview. "Foreigner has an audience from 65- to 15-years-old. I know that because I've spoken to so many of them. So, the air guitar contest is exciting to the teenagers, it's exciting to the AARP [age] range, and everyone in between, and the fact you can win the guitar and win a trip to Hawaii to see Foreigner play. I mean, what more could you ask for?

"It's good, wholesome fun. It's craziness. It's adults being able to just have a good time."
